West Point Virginia Sports
The West Virginia women's basketball team started the new year with its first win of the season at home against Kansas on Saturday night. Courtney Ramey scored 18 points and led five players in double figures in the scorecard, and the Mountaineers allowed only eight rushing touchdowns in nine games. Texas defeated the Jayhawks 66-52, setting the school record for most points in a single game in school history. In the eight games this season, three different Sooners have scored at least 29 points per game and scored 29 plus points or 32 or more in four of them.
The Mountaineers "offensive line is not great, but it is among the best in the Army this season. In terms of passing yards per game, West Virginia is the second-best passing attack Army has seen all season, and the big question is whether the WVU defense will have enough answer to the big-play threat from the Army at the scrimmage line. West Texas A & M (8 - 4, 3 - 2): West West Va. may struggle to hold its own against a disciplined Army defense that ranks second in the nation in points allowed and third in total defense.
Offensive, the army's mission has never changed: dominate the line of battle, control the clock and lead the football down the opposing team's throats.
The Black Knights have implemented that game plan well this season, using 22 different ball carriers who average more than 1,000 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns per game, while recording 33 rushing touchdowns and finishing fourth nationally. Tyler has started the last three games and leads the team with 945 yards, nine scores, while the junior running back has nine touchdowns. The 6ft 3in, 215-pound senior quarterback completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Dodgers' favorite targets are junior wide receiver Jordan Wright and junior tight end Jordan Smith, who both earned the "Team All - Big East" award for the second consecutive season. Wright, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior, has assembled a team - and scored 45 catches for 611 yards and four touchdowns.
Austin Kendall has started nine games as quarterback for the Mountaineers this season but has attempted only six passes. Army has used four different quarterbacks to orchestrate its triple-option attack, with sophomores Tyler Williams, Tyler Gaffney and Austin Kendall making the most snaps this year. Leading the way is quarterback and former West Point star Matt Eberle.
The scandal led to reforms at West Point that cracked down on hazing and moved the academy toward a model that emphasizes a more open environment, one that develops leadership skills among cadets. Eberle was allowed to play after West Point Superintendent suspended a policy in October that prevented those who violated the academy's code of honor from representing the academies in public, including athletes at sporting events.
Quarterback Austin Kendall led two touchdown drives in the first half as WVU's defense brought the Army's much-vaunted running game to its lowest point of the season. While a change at quarterback for Kendall and West Virginia gave the Army more firepower through the air, their rushed offensive was not pursued.
The Mountaineers held the Army (9-3) to the lowest intoxication average of the season and the second-lowest total intoxication in Army history.
After Jarret Doege turned the ball over twice in the first half, Kendall stepped in and returned West Virginia to defeat Army. Oklahoma's Madi Williams scored a school-record 45 points, becoming the 12th player of the week. Freshman Jalen Bridges started his career as a quarterback and was the only West Texas player to score consistently and have a career high - four touchdown passes and one touchdown run. The alumnus had four rushing touchdowns, two on the ground and one on special teams, setting the Liberty Bowl record.
Army slipped a more prominent bowl spot into the 2021 class, setting a new school record for most bowl slots in a single season in school history after losing three of its top four players last season.
The Black Knights were originally scheduled for the Independence Bowl, but appeared to be cut from the Bowl lineup until the Shreveport, Louisiana, was canceled. The Army fell to 6-3, for the first time since losing to Alabama in the 1988 Sun Bowl and the second time in school history.
The Sooners are trying to get through a particularly difficult period of their schedule, where they face four of the top five teams in the Associated Press Top 25. They have lost 11 games in a row against teams in the top two tiers The Sooners tried and failed, but they survived.
The Black Knights, who have ended the regular season on a three-game winning streak, will try to continue their winning streak. West Virginia will try to fight back against the Army in the Liberty Bowl after missing the postseason for the first time in school history with a 3-7 record last year.
