When I was elected mayor, one of my priorities was to increase the resources available to the City of West Point to purchase new buildings and infrastructure. Given the high cost of living and lack of funding from the State of Virginia, it is necessary to maintain a reasonable balance. Finally, I would like to say once again that it has been a pleasure to serve in this capacity for over 20 years as Mayor and Member of the Board of Trustees.
In this budget, I am able to approve tax cuts for taxpayers and, given the current economic challenges we face, the timing could not be better. The Council has been preparing for this reduction in interest rates for several years and we have been able to bring small and medium-sized enterprises up to acceptable levels while continuing to provide resources for urban services. I expect that in the near future we will start the H.O.P.E. initiative to reopen the economy and to involve more companies in the initiative.
